Carillon 2009 'Perfect Day'

On Queen's Day, Thursday April 30th 2009, the event Carillon 2009 Perfect Day takes place simultaneously in New York and in the Netherlands. On that day the song Perfect Day of the celebrated rock musician Lou Reed is performed on all carillons in the Netherlands, as well as on the world's largest carillon at the Riverside Church in New York.

Renowned carillonneur Sjoerd Tamminga from Goes, the Netherlands, will play the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon at the Riverside Church in New York, the biggest instrument of its kind, as visiting musician. Musician and singer Lou Reed will be present! The concert, which will take place between 11.30 am and 12.30 pm, is best heard in the parks surrounding the Riverside Church.

Since 1998, Perfect Day can be heard every fifteen minuteson the carillon in Goes, the Netherlands, on every Queen's Day. Sonologist Jorrit Tamminga, son of Sjoerd Tamminga, made a special arrangement for the carilloncomputer. This is part of the programme on Queen's Day around De Stenen Brug, an artproject which has yearly organised a new-style Queen's Day since 1998. On the occasion of the celebration of the excellent American-Dutch relations this local initiative on Queen's Day extends for once to the Netherlands ánd New York.

November 2008, Lou Reed was in Groningen at the occasion of a series of concerts by his wife Laurie Anderson, and he visited the Martini Tower on invitation of the originators of the carillon event. The city's carillonneur Auke de Boer showed him around, and Lou Reed and his wife played the Groninger bells together. Lou Reed showed a great interest in the historical instrument and gave his permission to use his song for this special project.

From 11.30AM to 12.30 PM, Sjoerd Tamminga plays a special program that revolves around Perfect Day on the Laura Spelman Rockefeller Memorial Carillon in the Riverside Church. Lou Reed will be attending this performance.
The Netherlands
In the Netherlands Perfect Day will be played all over the day on all carillons that take part in the event. In the morning the carillon of the Martini Tower in Groningen will start the celebrations and at the end of the day the carillon of the Maria Magdalena Church in Goes will finish the day in style. During the day carillons all over the Netherlands will chime 'Perfect Day'. In Apeldoorn the mobile carillon 'De Paltz' will be played during the visit of Queen Beatrix.
