ABOUT THE NY400 BiCYCLES
In 1609, a Dutch ship called the Half Moon arrived to the shores of what is now New York City with Captain Henry Hudson at the helm. 400 years later, 200 bright orange NY400 bikes undertook the same journey as Hudson across the Atlantic Ocean to show New York City how much the Dutch love their bikes!
The City of New York has embraced biking the past few years as the most sustainable, green & clean way of transportation. The NY400 biking program is a great incentive to promote this growing New York City biking culture. The NY400 bikes will we used in several NYC bike-sharing events in August and during the NY400 Week in September. Later this year, most of the bikes will be donated to Recycle-A-Bicycle. The rest will be auctioned to the public, supporting a charitable cause.

Wonderful bike paths up here in the" Broncks" (thank you Netherlands!)
Newly refurbished paths Pelham Bay Park, to Orchard Beach via Turtle Cove golf range & Rodman's neck circle or onto City Island Bridge (Traffic caution on CI Ave. busy #29 bus route so turn at first light at Jack's Bait & Tackle and go the scenic route. Maritime Museum on Fordham street on Sundays is a gem. Also to Pelham bike path from the Pelham Bay equestrian center horse stables to Manor Lane off Pelhamdale Avenue (walk bike at intersections on Pell Circle) & wont need Shore Road past public golf course. Enjoy the view!
THE BIKE IS ALWAYS RIGHT

If you have been hit by bikes twice, you probably didn't learn your lesson the first time. LOOK WHERE YOU ARE GOING! Pedestrians in this town, along with drivers, have an almost pathological aversion to observation and awareness. Pedestrians, in general, are completely oblivious to their surroundings, and do things like step into the street without looking, then get mad at the biker that avoids contact, but comes too close for comfort. Perhaps you should look before stepping into the street. I am sure, however, that both times you have been hit, you were on the sidewalk standing still. And please, do not say anything about bikers ignoring traffic rules when every pedestrian in this town crosses against the light and in the middle of the block. You know you do it. The most common mistake the pedestrian makes is stepping into the crosswalk, finally noticing the bike coming at them, and freezing in place. FLASH: the biker, who is only alive because of his powers of observation and judgement, has already calculated for you as a MOVING OBJECT. Keep moving. Stopping necessitates an uncomfortable and hurried recalculation that often results in pain. Use your eyes, save a bike!

Please wait ...

I am originally from New York City (born and raised) and recently moved to Holland. I am going to be visiting this week and am so excited about the free bike rentals!
