NY400 Week: New Amsterdam Village
Location
Bowling Green Park, Broadway and Beaver Street
New York, NY
Time: 11 - 7 PM
Admission: Free
The New Amsterdam Village consists of traditional Dutch canal houses, a windmill and a stage set up on an open, outside area. In the village some of the best known Dutch agricultural products and foods can be sampled and bought, including some our famous cheeses, herring, dollar pancakes also known as poffertjes, sirup wafels (stroopwafels), cut flowers, flower bulbs and green roofs.
The Village has a historic component as well: traditional crafts are shown, such as wooden shoes making, glass blowing and a floral workshop. You can also rent orange Dutch bicycles for free there, to bike to the different NY400 Week events throughout the city.
In addition to the New Amsterdam Village, which represents a more "traditional" version of Holland, a demonstration model of a Dutch greenhouse will be showcased. The Netherlands is a world leader in greenhouse innovations and the Dutch have made great strides in energy saving technologies in this industry. In this special greenhouse visitors can familiarize themselves with flowering lilies, greenhouse vegetables, special micro vegetables and a bumblebee colony. Also a model of the electricity producing greenhouse can be found there, as well as an overview of the latest technologies and research in the Dutch glasshouse construction sector.
Throughout the eleven days Bowling Green Park is host to the New Amsterdam Village, daily special activities will ve organized. These events include stage performances such as the CressAct and music by Jan David (who wrote 'Miss Sunshine' for the NY400 events), Kleintje Pils, Dynamp and the Royal Netherlands Navy Band and Louise van Aarsen.
In addition, there will be traditional Dutch costume shows, street organ music and children's activities. View the full program.
