NY400 Week: Replica of the Half Moon

SEP 09, 2009
USA

Location
Battery Park, Downtown Manhattan
New York

Time: 11 - 3 PM

Half MoonThe only existing replica of Henry Hudson's Halve Maen, annually re-creates the original voyage in 1609 up the Hudson River - which laid the foundation for the New Netherland colony and modern day New York City. Come see the ship's exterior and meet its crew and captain.

The yearly Half Moon replica project consists of three elements. First, the recreation of the original voyage. The crew consists of an ethnically and culturally diverse group of 12 and 13 year old students, both Dutch and American. They do not only learn to operate the ship, but also pursue an ambitious academic program in science and math while underway.

Second, the enhancement and redesign of the website of The New Netherland Museum  / Half Moon - Specifically the addition of a number of interactive, educational features will make the site more accessible to the general public and to classrooms worldwide. It will allow the students on board to communicate and exchange information with students and the public at large.

And third, the reprinting of existing, out-of-print curricula and the development of new curricula - These educational criteria are intended for use in the classrooms. The curricula are interdisciplinary in nature, integrating math and science, with geography, language, arts, writing and history.
