Marcel Wanders in Philadelphia

The A/V team at the Philadelphia Museum of Art has been working double-overtime, installing “Marcel Wanders: Daydreams,” a multimedia exhibition that opened Sunday november 22nd. The exhibition, a retrospective of sorts of the Dutch design star’s career, is Wanders’s first solo show in the United States. Why Philadelphia? “We asked him,” said Kathy Hiesinger, the museum’s curator of European decorative arts.

NYC Marathon

On Sunday November 1st, 400 NY400 Dutch runners joined the 40th running of the ING New York City Marathon in an effort to raise awareness for the NY400 celebration. To prepare for the race, the runners joined on Saturday the International Friendship Run, a short training course for foreign runners. Soon the NY400 Fleet of Dutch bikes will be officially handed over to Recycle-A-Bicycle to further promote bicycle use as a sustainable way of transportation in New York City. Twelve of those bright orange Batavus bikes will be auctioned off on December 14th to raise funds for Recycle-A-Bicycle's educational programming of the NY400 bikes. Half Moon in Yonkers

When Henry Hudson sailed into New York Harbor in 1609, he and his crew aboard the Dutch ship the Half Moon could never have imagined that four hundred years later, they would be so famous. The only existing replica of the Half Moon, under the command of Captain Chip Reynolds, arrived in Yonkers on October 15 and will remain docked through October 31st. For those who missed out on viewing the Replica during the NY400 week, the public is invited to come on board for public tours on October 24&25 with a final day of public tours set for October 31.

Ice-World ice rink NYC

This winter New York City will be getting one of the most energy-efficient ice rinks in the nation. The Dutch company Ice World together with its American dealer Rink Management Services Corportation (R.M.S.) will be building a 1500m2 ice rink and 450m2 skating path in Battery Park City. READ MORE

Last weekend was the 2009 Rensselaerswijck Seminar in Albany, NY. This year the annual Seminar had a two-day program with an opening on Thursday evening with Russell Shorto and speakers on Friday and Saturday. The seminar took place in New York State Museum’s Carole Huxley Theatre.

Teams of APBP members fanned out on orange Dutch bicycles from the Walk21 conference last night to explore on-street bicycle facilities. Veteran New York bicyclists Michael King and Amy Pfeiffer led one group of bicyclists downtown, while Jackson Wandres and Steve Faust led another intrepid group uptown.

Dutch Flower Dresses

Two unique flower dresses were displayed at the opening of the New Amsterdam Pavilion on 09.09.09, which is a gift of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to the City of New York as part of the NY400 celebrations. Designer duo Niels van Eijk and Miriam van der Lubbe received a commission from the Flower Council of Holland for the design of these colorful, ceremonial dresses.

The Ancestor: Everardus Bogardus

Everardus Bogardus was the second Reformed minister of New Amsterdam (present-day New York). He was both a minister among the Europeans, the Native Americans, and the West-Africans in the settlement, a spokesman of the opposition during ‘Kieft’s War’, and a colonist married to the famous Anneke Jans. In the eyes of his descendant Peter Bogardus, a modern New Yorker, he was most notable for his openness and ability to relate to other cultures.

The Brooklyn Paper goes Dutch! Three reporters from The Brooklyn Paper explored the roots of their borough in its ancestral home: Breukelen. But their fact-finding mission took a turn for the worst when they discovered Breukelen is to be merged with two other cities, thereby losing its name. ‘SAVE BREUKELEN! Our ancestral home is facing extinction!’, a breaking news headline reads on the paper’s website.

Peekskill goes Dutch

A stroll through the City of Peekskill in the Hudson Valley yields an unexpected encounter with the region’s Dutch connection. The city’s sidewalks, roads, walks and benches are embellished with thousands of Delftware-inspired tiles, portraying a wide range of subjects: from Henry Hudson and his ship the Half Moon to tulips, windmills, and the Dutch Royal Family. The tiles were designed by students from the Hudson Valley, uniting them with their Dutch heritage.

The New Amsterdam Pavilion arrived in NYC! Even though it won't be unveiled until September 9th, we got a sneak preview as the pavilion entered its new hometown last night.
