Going Dutch | Droog New York Expands (New York Times Blog)

December 08, 2009

In Dutch, “droog” means dry, so it’s always seemed a proper name for the wittily conceptual design brand that opened an outlet in SoHo last winter. But you might recall that “droog” was also teenage slang for “friend” in 1971’s “A Clockwork Orange,” which makes the name doubly appropriate for the store’s next chapter. Starting tomorrow, Droog New York will expand its offerings to include fashion items by six Dutch fashion designers who are friends of the brand and were hand-selected by the Droog founder Renny Ramakers for the same mix of humor and ingenuity that defines the 16-year-old company. “I noticed that in New York I didn’t see any Dutch fashion besides Viktor & Rolf,” Ramakers explains. “But we’re also not a fashion store, and we don’t want to be one.”
